Lina is confused throughout most of the book.She has lots of friends, but chooses Lina to be her “BFF”. Vanessa has an up-beat personality, and is crazy about boys. Vanessa is described as “the pretty one”, by the narrator (Lina). They are the same age and she looks fairly different from Lina, despite the brown hair and eyes. She is the kind of girl who needs comfort when she's lonely. Lina is a smart girl, and a sensitive one. She is tall and skinny, and is often labeled “daddy long legs”. Not only is her hair long, her legs are too. Lina is a 12 year old girl with long dark brown hair.The story usually takes place at Vanessa's house or at her school.
